Our Yoga teachers approached us recently, wanting to build a Gaushala, and allied facilities, in a leased land (Coconut Grove) at Bidadi, Bangalore. The structure had to be in module, allowing future expansion, had to be "green" echoing the ethos of the place and be a DIY construction system, so they can move to another land when the lease period expires. We looked back at our shuttering system design for rammed earth walls, and derived a joinery detail, that allows speedy frame construction with used acacia/eucalyptus poles. The infills and the roof of these structures are proposed to be made of tetra pack - recycled - panels from Saahas (www.saahas.org) and chappes (Cane matts). Flooring would be rammed earth finished with cow dung mix - hand plastered by the residents.
